Why Texas-Specific Matters

Most online legal calculators give you a national average. That is close to useless in family law, because family law is state law, and Texas is an outlier on almost every point. A generic number can be off by thousands of dollars. These calculators are built from the Texas Family Code and current Texas court fees, so the figures reflect what actually happens in a Texas courtroom.

Child support looks at one income, not two

Texas is one of only six states that use the Percentage of Income model. It applies a flat percentage to the paying parent's net resources, 20% for one child, and caps that income at $11,700 per month. Most states blend both parents' incomes instead. See the Texas child support calculator.

Alimony is capped and hard to get

Texas court-ordered spousal maintenance is capped at the lesser of $5,000 or 20% of the payer's income, with a presumption against awarding it at all. Many states are far more generous. See the Texas alimony calculator.

Cost is driven by conflict, not filing fees

The Texas court filing fee is a few hundred dollars, but a contested divorce or custody fight runs into five figures because of attorney hours and court-appointed professionals. See the Texas divorce cost calculator and the Texas custody cost calculator.

Every calculator is free, needs no signup, and cites the statute or fee schedule behind its numbers. They are educational estimates, not legal advice. For a decision about your own case, speak with a licensed Texas family law attorney.
